How to Get the Best From Your Executive Search Agency

If you are a Manufacturing or Engineering business and have decided to retain the services of an Executive Recruitment partner in order to help your locate and recruit a key individual into your company, you are possibly asking yourself "which recruitment company do I choose?" With the UK Recruitment Market estimated to be worth in excess of £23billion annually, with a myriad of recruitment companies offering what at first glance looks like exactly the same service, it is sometimes difficult to know which company to opt for.

Selecting an appropriate Executive Recruitment company to run your project is in itself a critical decision and getting it right can make the difference between having a thorough, professionally run campaign or a badly coordinated campaign with your organisation being unprofessionally represented. Therefore before you choose a recruitment company there are a number of recommend steps that you should take.

Steps to selecting an appropriate recruitment company

The first step would be to get a few recommendations from people who have utilised the services of sector specific head-hunters who operate within the Manufacturing and Engineering market. Working with a recruiter that specialises in the placement of manufacturing and engineering jobs, who has a good understanding of the nuances within the sector is vital, otherwise how would they able to benchmark the abilities of a candidate? It is also worth considering speaking to people who have experienced manufacturing and engineering recruiters as a candidate, and asking questions such as: How professional was the company? What was the communication like? How did they represent their client? Did they demonstrate a thorough understanding of engineering and manufacturing? Would you class them as experts in manufacturing and engineering recruitment?

Once a number of possible manufacturing and engineering recruitment companies have been identified, the next important step is to have initial conversations. Like any project, the compatibility of the project team is critical and by having a short discussion you should get a feel as to whether you could work with these businesses or not. Following these calls you now should have two or three potential recruiters who you should then meet face to face.

Within these face to face meetings it would be advisable to give the recruiters an insight into your organisation and the role you are looking to fill before then asking the recruiters up front as to how they would run the assignment and fill the job.

Typically in these meetings, organisations will often spend time discussing the technical aspects of the role, the desired skill sets, the desired knowledge base of prospective candidates and their qualifications. However, in order to get the best out of your recruiter, there is other important information that you will need to pass on.

Information to pass on during your meetings with executive recruiters

Firstly you should give the recruiter an overview of your organisation, tell them the company life story, where you have come from, where you are looking to achieve, what your business strategy is. Then you should look at how you are going to achieve this, through what means, what are your tactics. Then you should consider the objectives, when you are looking to hit certain milestones, when will you get there and how these milestones will be measured. Furthermore it is worth discussing your company's succession plans, what are the limitations of the other people within your senior management team, what are the strengths. As part of the brief it is also important to highlight the development and training that will offered to the successful candidate, what guidance and direction will they get, if this direction will be given by you, other internal resources or will this training be outsourced to third party providers.

By spending time discussing the above, you will yourself develop the "recruitment policy" for this appointment. The recruitment policy which is typically made up of 3 key areas: Motivations/ Aspirations of the individual, the desired skills and desired qualifications are what the recruiter will need to be armed with in order to run the project successfully.

The key areas to cover in the brief

- What your organisation does, its turnover, number of employees, hierarchical structure.
- The history of the business.
- An overview of your competitors.
- Your organisation goals/ business strategy.
- Your company's business tactics i.e. how your organisation is to achieve the company goals.
- The business objectives, when milestones will be reached, how they will be measured.
- Your internal succession plan.
- The job description.
- The person specification
- The timescales you have set for your recruitment, the candidate start date.

Questions to ask the recruiters following the brief

At this meeting, make sure you also ask the agency about their own business - how long has it been operating? How much experience do the consultants have within the manufacturing and engineering sector? What areas within the industrial recruitment market do they particularly specialise in? What recruitment process will they adopt? Can they recruit online as well as by traditional means? What are their charges? What are their success rates on retained assignments? How do they interview, do they use competency based interviewing techniques? What media will they advertise in? Do they know which media gives the best results when seeking manufacturing and engineering candidates? Which job boards give best value for money? Is this an assignment for traditional media?

All of these questions will help to form an opinion as to whether this agency will be a good one to work with. See if you can get some references or case studies on similar projects they have completed in the past. It might also be appropriate to introduce the recruiter to other key stakeholders in this hire, individuals who will have a decision as to which candidate you opt for as these people might have slight variations on what they feel are important considerations.

Use this meeting as an interview; look at how the consultant questions you about your business as a guide to whether or not you think they can get the relevant information out of prospective candidates.
Once you have seen several executive search agencies, set out the pros and cons of each, taking into account how you interacted with the consultants as well as the bare facts about their business. If you feel like you've established the beginnings of a good relationship and their business has taken the time to understand yours, and has all the things in place to provide a good recruitment service, then you're likely to get what you want from them.

Lastly, once you have chosen your recruiter it is important to lay out the rules of engagement. What is the project plan, what timescales are you working to, how the communication shall be carried out.

This process itself will take time; however it is certainly a valuable step when looking to recruit a key individual who will have a huge impact on your business.

Recruiters, Headhunters and Employed Elitists - Shame on You!

After 13 wonderful years with my employer, I recently resigned (gasp!). It was a difficult decision but one I felt necessary. I was looking forward to exploring unemployment, the lazy morning cups of coffee and eyeing the job boards. So, down the rabbit hole I went....

Linked In is a reputed good place to start and there I came across an interesting discussion called "Good Manners Matter, Don't They?" The numerous tales of how people are quick to request work be done for them but slow to respond (if at all) are disturbing. Work hard on preparing a proposal or material for a prospect and apparently, unless the answer is yes, most opt to say no to saying no.

And we, of the Unemployed, are no more worthy of attention. We work hard when applying- researching the designated place of future joy, customizing our resume, following up with emails/calls/letters. Yet, publications abound with iterations that the Unemployed should or do feel ashamed of their situation.

Well I say - Shame On You, IABC magazine Communication World which compared and contrasted the aftermath of a natural disaster to the wake of a layoff. According to the article, the former elicits sympathy and support. As for the latter, "Those employees who have been let go may be ridden with guilt, embarrassment, shame and a lack of self-confidence. They are often politely shunned by former co-workers, neighbors, and even family and friends"

On Alice's trip down the rabbit hole, her drink from the vial literally shrinks her to ten inches tall. My trip- our trips - down the rabbit hole to UnemploymentLand should not do the same. After all, who among us has never been fired, dumped, betrayed, used or abandoned?

While most of the aforementioned article addresses the physical and mental state of employees who have survived layoffs, at no point does the author point out how invalid and unacceptable it is (and it is!, in many cases) that this state of mind is the Unemployed's onus. Be it self-inflicted or, in the reverse of the Shakespearean greatness, thrust upon us by publications like this one or one appearing in Fortune Magazine's April edition. "How Do I Get a Headhunter Interested in Me" interviews a headhunter who is portrayed as saying, "Don't Call Us: It doesn't help." Shame on You! The Bible says "Ask and ye shall receive." Even disregarding it, how will we- the qualified, competent individuals with strong work ethics- get noticed if we don't ask, call or write?

Shame On You, hiring managers for allowing this behavior to proliferate. Your in-house recruiters are a direct reflection on you. The people who answer your phone (and don't return calls), whose names are connected to yours (and ignore personally addressed emails) and those from whom you request follow up be done (and it's simply not) are how we perceive you. Maybe you practice "do unto others," but if those around you do not, you are guilty by association. In my eight years as a hiring manager, I made sure that my team and I treated all applicants as does Nabisco (see below).

Yes yes I know- you're swamped, overwhelmed; you get so many calls, applications, inquiries and emails. Poor you of the Employed! Because I have yet to meet a working person who cannot easily improve their daily productivity by 10% (let's just start by you shutting Facebook or whatever social media/internet site is your weakness and yes, I mean keeping it closed for the entire workday), I cannot empathize with you. It's always a question of priorities.

Some people do understand this and therefore practice it in their organizations. Thank You to those headhunters, almost always of small firms, who are graciously responsive. Thank You to those of you who are Employed and care- You know who you are and you are the true elite, far superior to your colleagues,

Thank You to the New York Times which published an article expounding on the discourtesy and disregard characterizing the hiring world today and the few, unique companies who refuse to cow to this trend. It was titled "Be Nice to Job Seekers. (They're Shoppers, Too.)." How right the writer is! I, for example, will no longer shop at Ann Taylor given their treatment of me as an applicant. The write-up included the following:

"I recently heard a story about a manager from Nabisco...When he declared that his company responded to every resume it received - solicited and unsolicited - he was met with incredulous stares from his peers.

"Why respond to every resume when that's clearly not necessary?" someone asked.

The Nabisco manager smiled and replied, " Because - everyone eats cookies."

How delightful- and insightful- a response. So why are such wonderful individuals and companies like Nabisco and Southwest Airlines apparently in the minority? Perhaps this wake-up call is all that's needed! Then again, it could be that the failure to reply and say 'no, thank you' is an unfortunate side effect of the manners we hold so dear. The word 'no' is one which invokes a multitude of unpleasant associations and many of us seek to avoid it at all costs- including not saying it to others. Maybe it's time for our optimistic society to embrace the usually-chastised naysayers for the level of comfort they have developed with uttering the N-word. Chances are that receiving an appropriately customized 'no thank you but we appreciate your time' would leave us all much more satisfied and inclined to continue purchasing...be it cookies or clothing.

Headhunters Secrets To Landing Your Next Job

Headhunters are hardly given a considered by most people. This is because many think using headhunters simply does not apply to them. Wrongly they believe it only applies to those in professional jobs or highly paid ones. This could not be further from the truth. And because of this many miss out on jobs that they could otherwise be doing. A lot has changed over the years with the development of the internet. Many are now being headhunted for even admin jobs.

Headhunters is your shortcut to many of the jobs never advertised

The benefit of being head hunted is you have much more of a chance to landing the job you want right from the start. This is because there will be less competition around. Less people are applying directly or are being put forward. With this being the case, all you need to do is apply the headhunters secrets to land any job you want. And this is even for management or admin jobs. Yes, you still need to apply for any suitable jobs that are advertised especially the local ones. This is because you need to keep all your options open.

Headhunters are under pressure to help you

Recruitment agencies that act as headhunters are under pressure all the time to fill the vacancies they are given. And many of these vacancies often cannot be filled by those on their books. So they need to look elsewhere otherwise they will lose out on any placement commissions. And to be considered for any of the jobs that are suitable, the inside secret is knowing how to make yourself seen more on the internet. This is so recruiting agencies and even employers can find you and your details. This is what all recruitment agencies do even the top specialist ones that specialise in senior management and board level placements. They search to find the right people with the levels of skills and experience being asked for.

And the first way to be noticed is to have the right CV on the internet with the leading top recruitment sites. Yes, many also use them, but many do not know how to use such sites to their advantage. They simply put their CV up and hope for the best. There is more to it than that. You need to use the right keywords. But the good news it is easy to be noticed. It does not take much to do once you know the headhunters secrets of how to stand out from the crowd. That is from all the others who may be in direct competition to you. One way to do this is to raise your profile on the internet. Join similar networks that cover your field and job area.

Headhunters leverage is an option that is often overlooked

Many change jobs just to try and get a higher paid one. But in the present economic climate, many employers are now offering lower salaries to ones being offered years ago. This is because those looking for jobs are prepared to accept lower salaries. This is being brought about because so many unemployed are going after the same jobs and the number of workers now available from Europe. So what you need to do is keep your options open. So if you are looking for more money there is another option that should be considered and that is headhunters leverage. You can do this around your present day job. And because you know how to do your present job inside out, you can devote more time to doing headhunters leverage. This will then allow you to top up your day job incomes to levels you never thought possible. Yes, you can also do this when you change jobs but with any new job you need to focus more on your new job as everything is new to you.

The real problem with earning any income in the traditional way, it is linear by nature. This is how 99% of incomes are earned through most day jobs and any part-time work. That is for every hour worked you are paid a set amount only once. But the real downside with linear is only so many hours can be put in as you have to be there all the time. So this dictates how much you can earn. Yes, setting yourself up in business often lets you earn even more. But even then, you're tied to the business and by the number of hours you can put in. You're now a slave to your business as you are really just another employee. This is not an option for many.

But there is an alternative to earning money other than through linear. Very few people take advantage of residual incomes. That is you only have to do something once and yet you are paid again and again for it. So there is no limit on how much you can earn possibly from having done something just once. So if you want even more income coming in all you need to do is set up even more income streams on exactly the same basis, again and again. Many start by setting up at least 8 income streams around their day job. But the real benefit is there is no limit on how much you can earn from each one.

Use headhunters leverage to your advantage

And all you need to do to start setting up your own residual incomes, is do exactly the same as those that have been making a living out of this for years. And most of these do what is sometimes called headhunters leverage on a part-time basis because of how much income they generate. They prefer instead to spend long periods of quality time with their families. And when they take holidays abroad they can still keep on doing this if they want to. Some have even said the 2 hour week maintenance is too much for them. So they have out sourced even that to others for a small flat fee from the income generated each month.

You're shown how to do it step by step all the way. Nothing is left out so you are wondering what to do next. And best of all this can be done around your day job when you have a free moment or any spare time. And to set these up, they cost next to nothing depending on how you set them up. And once you have set up the first one you just go on and do the same again and again. Just set up as many income streams as you want. As they very much look after themselves, you can set up as many as you want. Some take more looking after than others. But to look after them all, should take no more than 2 hours a week in all. This then allows you to work for long periods at a time by just doing a '2 hour week' any where you wish. And should you wish to stop doing it you can immediately be done with no comebacks at all. Most prefer to hand it on to others for a share of the income.

And once you have set up a few, you will be that much better off with all the credit cards and loans now paid off. Worried about doing it? No need to be. No qualification or experience is needed of any kind. If you want to, you can set up your own self group of like minded friends to help each other out. But best of all you'll now be able to do all this around your day job and family. This is at times to suit you. Many start doing it in front of the TV at home or whilst travelling to work on the train.

Executive Headhunters

One of the errors made in Executive Employment is handing out your Executive CV to everyone who claims to be an Executive Headhunter. With some simple research and questioning could easily reveal that they are a Recruiter or even less on the scale of employment sharks.

If you make this mistake, you will at best blight your Senior Executive Jobs opportunities, and at worst extend your period of job seeking indefinitely. So, how do you tell an Executive Headhunter from a Recruiter?

Employment background

There are three types of basic paid-for animal that roam the employment market place:

Job agencies: the familiar High Street chains that place mostly temporary workers, in both blue and white collar jobs. The job seeker is contracted and paid by the agency, with the percentage varying between 5% and 15%, but always with a minimum. Hence in some minimum wage blue collar jobs, the blue collar worker doing the actual work will be paid less than the employment agency, thanks to minimum contract clauses
Recruitment agencies: focus on management and executive position. These are now mostly sector focused, as job agencies have eaten away at the bottom end. Some recruiters run contract teams who will have contracts similar to job agencies, but most will operate on permanent position briefs. Job briefs may or may not be exclusive to that recruiter, who could be working in competition. Percentages will vary from 12% to 35%+, with most working on a "paid on success" basis over a "paid on process progression."
Executive Headhunters: will have a long term relationship with their clients, and although they may not be exclusive to that client, will be exclusive on that job brief. Often paid a retainer up front of between a third and half of their agreed fee, the final fee is between 30% and 200% of first year salary plus bonus
There are variations which as a senior executive job seeker you need to be aware of. For instance, many will have heard of CV fishing, why does it exist? One High Street agency still runs a "paid on process" recruitment contract with its clients, which pays: 1/3 on engagement, 1/3 on CV delivery (minimum of 12); 1/3 post interview. Hence, as 2/3rds of their fee is paid just for placing 12 CV's on the desk of their client employer, their staff have a huge incentive to CV fish.

Executive Headhunter

Though paid by their employer client, it is in the interests of the Executive headhunter to serve both the employer client as well as the Senior Executive Jobs seeker. Reputation is key to the Executive Headhunter, and they don't like damaging their reputation in their core market place with anyone. As this reputation in market is hard won, and the fees paid know to be high, often many internal recruiters will claim to be headhunters. They are not, as headhunters are independent of the employer client and only work on a retained payment brief: this person calling you is trying to fill an internal position. Further, as headhunters only work from employer client briefs, anyone who offers to find you a job is not a headhunter: that is a job coach you are talking to!

Executive Headhunter v Recruiter!

Now that you know the basic difference between Headhunters and Recruiters, you are part armed to test the difference of anyone's claim. For instance, try these questions:

How long has this organisation been a client
How many briefs have they had from this client before/how many people placed - a headhunters number may be low, but percentage placed will be high; the recruiters will be opposite
What is their brief for this job - a headhunter could now complete a 30minute speech, where as a recruiter will only have a job specification
How many job applicants/CV's will they put forward - a headhunter will pace 2 or 3 people per brief maximum in front of a client; a recruiter will place 3 or more
When does the client want a person in place - headhunters will focus on the right candidate; recruiters will say "now" or "soon"
Recruiter meeting

Competitive brief recruiters and internal pay systems mean that however they found you, they can't spend time meeting job seekers to properly vet candidates as a headhunter would. So use time and process to tell the difference. When their contractual process payments asks for a pile of so many CV's, getting your CV adds fresh meat to the pile for their client, and hence prompt payment.

So, when they ask for your Executive CV, offer them your LinkedIn profile. If they press, offer to meet them for a coffee. Headhunters will at this point probably ask more questions and be happy to meet serious Senior Executive Jobs seekers; competitive brief recruiters do not have the time to meet, and hence at this point close the conversation.

Headhunter pay

But the most telling difference between a headhunter and a recruiter is asking them the question of how/when will they get paid. Some job seekers feel that this question is too arrogant and up front. I understand that, but both want to engage with people they can place who have realistic expectations of what that job in their market will pay.

Secondly, much as though money may not be a daily conversation for you, pay and package is in the world of employment.

But thirdly and most tellingly, if they are asking your pay or package requirements, then knowing what and when they get paid equates to motivation. The amount is not necessarily the answer you want, it's the when which is the telling truth: exclusive brief head hunters get paid a percentage of fee up front; competitive brief recruiters get paid after the successful job seekers start date.

The more they get paid the sooner in the process - and before they call you - the more likely they are to be a headhunter. The sooner you can tell the difference between an Executive Headhunter and a recruiter, the sooner you know your Executive job search will be more successful.

There is no harm in engaging with a recruiter, and many Executive job seekers successfully do. There are many good and great recruiters working on many different client briefs, and hence payment plans. But knowing who you are talking to and how they are briefed/paid will enable you to assess how successful your job search is likely to be fulfilled by pursuing that path - and that is the real gain here to a successful Executive job search.

Good Luck!

What to Consider When Using a Headhunter During a Job Search

Headhunters are great to have as among your friends and acquaintances in growing your job network. Make sure you have two or more headhunters in your regular work contacts. And consider building great relationships with them. Make them aware if you're on the look out for a job in the market. They're usually among the best sources of latest information (not posted on job ads) on what's been taking place in the labor market, particularly the jobs available that call for certain particulars on background, depth and breadth of experience - even in a down market. But keep in mind the following (which this author culled from his own experiences doing headhunting with a small firm, immediately after college):

1) HEADHUNTERS WORK FOR THE INTERESTS OF THEIR CLIENTS. Their clients are the ones who pay them their fees to keep their businesses going and growing. As such, they're always on the look out for applicants to successfully place candidates for their clients. The faster they're able to complete these assignments, the better. This is another gauge for clients to keep on giving headhunters succeeding assignments (preferably on an exclusive arrangement). As such, you may subsequently be treated like a commodity on which their best hopes (based on their expertise and experience) are rested (or wagered) so they can do their next billing.

2) WHEN TO MEET WITH A HEADHUNTER. The best period to meet and know headhunters is when you're still employed, and doing very good in your job. As such, your resume looks better to prospective employers when you're currently employed. This also gets you, as a job hunter, to be in an advantageous position to negotiate for a better package. Ask any headhunter about this observation, and they'll usually say "it depends." However, the best match for a job and a candidate happens usually with someone who's still employed. Competitors among players in the same industry who use headhunters usually have the ideal or the near-ideal candidate they have in mind who are currently employed by their competitors - or else they could have easily done the recruitment themselves.

3) SOME HEADHUNTERS SPECIALIZE BY INDUSTRY, OR BY LOCATION. The job hunter has to approach headhunters who may be specializing in industry/ies where the job hunter is targeting to get into. But in case you've known a certain headhunter, it's best to approach this headhunter to introduce your credentials and background to him / her. The headhunter may give you referrals to their other contacts in their business.

4) HEADHUNTERS' ETHICAL PRACTICES. Headhunters don't "headhunt," or poach prospective candidates from their own clients (or where they have previously made a successful placement), for this creates a lasting poor impression on clients. If you are aware that your current employer makes use of certain headhunters, it's very helpful to make the approach, meet and know the headhunter in case you decide you're in the market. The headhunter may then be able to consider you as a prospective candidate - as you are the one who approached (and not the other way around).

5) SOME ACCOUNTS ARE ON A BEST-EFFORTS BASIS. This means a "job requirement" in a client-company has been waiting for referrals from several headhunting groups, or even from the own recruitment being done by the client-company. As such, there may be several headhunters working to make a successful placement of a candidate. Ask the headhunter you're talking with about this, so you, as a job hunter won't be disappointed when recruitment and placement completes so fast (or so slow, depending on certain situations).

6) SOME HEADHUNTING GROUPS HAVE SPECIALIZED PERSONNEL. Some of them have a lean number of people working for them. Depending on the structure of their organization, some have people who do both marketing (of the headhunting services to clients), and the search services ("hunting" for prospective candidates). Some headhunting groups usually have their marketing people getting in touch with you as among their prospective candidates for a search assignment. But they won't know much about the job details. If you agreed to come over for an initial interview (which some headhunting groups still do), you'll be asked to talk with a recruitment specialist who will then conduct the interview. Your next step is gather more about the job, if this happens - so that you can decide if you will pursue the opportunity or not.

7) THE BEST HEADHUNTERS ARE USUALLY AMONG THE BEST MANAGEMENT CONSULTANTS IN THEIR FIELDS. They provide the best search specialty advise, the best matching services (between a job vacancy and a candidate) in terms of their capabilities in showing two or more candidates for a shortlist within reasonable period of time. However, not every one among headhunters is able to do this. Some of them may just still be learning the ropes of this type of consulting business.

8) COMPLETION OF PROJECT. The headhunting process may take a minimum of 4 weeks of processing before completion. Expect to spend time waiting before a job is offered to you, if you get the opportunity to be interviewed and shortlisted (i.e. among the top candidates, usually not more than 4 candidates) for a job.

9) SEEK HELP FROM HEADHUNTERS FOR YOUR NEXT MANAGERIAL JOB. Headhunters have to be worth their fees so that their client-companies would be most willing to pay them big professional fees. Usually, client-companies will just be willing to pay such amounts for higher level recruitment, of which the headhunter is best suited to handle.

10) BACKGROUND OF HEADHUNTERS. Some headhunters and clients belong to the same "old boys network," those who have the same (social) backgrounds. Members or insiders play "chummy-chummy" with each other, just like in other exclusive groupings. Figure out how to penetrate their circle. This will be a key for you in getting access to high-level job opportunities usually available to those who are in-the-know.

And don't get surprised if you'll be asked to show up for interviews with several clients, even if you're not that keen to get into a new job now. The headhunter may be seeing you as possessing great potentials to get placed (i.e. offered a job). Headhunters run a business, remember.

Are Registered Massage Sessions Covered by OHIP?

All different types of massage can be beneficial in helping with many different types of aches and ailments. Sports massage, deep tissue massage and therapeutic massage can reduce back and neck pain, relieve stress and speed up the recovery process after surgeries and injuries, but without medical coverage the burden of cost can be too much for some patients to be able to afford.

Will I be Covered?

This is a common question because of the fact that massages can be so beneficial, but also so expensive. Unfortunately, the short answer seems to be that most registered massage sessions will not be covered by OHIP.

There are potentially some cases where massage may be covered, but there are some very specific requirements that must be met in order for the patient to be eligible for coverage: factors like the age of the patient, the nature of the injury being treated and whether or not the clinic administering the massage is registered as a designated https://balancecore.sg/service/sports-physiotherapy/physiotherapy clinic.

What's the Difference between Physiotherapy and Massage?

A hundred years age there wasn't a great deal of difference between a physiotherapist and a licensed sports massage therapist - both provided an almost identical rehabilitant service, but today's licensed physiotherapist actually use very little, if any massage, techniques in their treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and ailments.

In the past, sessions with a licensed sports massage therapist would very likely have been covered in full, but with recent changes to coverage under OHIP, coverage only pertains to a limited number of sessions with a designated physiotherapy clinic under the guidelines of eligibility.

Who's Covered?

With the new rules of coverage in place, in most cases, any patient over the age of sixty five or under the age of nineteen that needs physiotherapy sessions will have coverage up to a predetermined number of sessions. All residents of long term care facilities or nursing homes, regardless of age, who require physiotherapy will have coverage up to a pre determined amount of sessions in a calendar year; and anyone needing physiotherapy sessions in their home after having been hospitalized, regardless of age, will be covered up to a pre determined number of sessions.

Under these new rules, anyone not currently living in a long term care facility or anyone not having been recently hospitalized, between the ages of nineteen and sixty four, will not be covered for any massage or physiotherapy sessions, even if the physiotherapy clinic is on the designated list on the OHIP website.

Therapeutic, sports, hot stone and shiatsu massage can all bring with them a host of benefits to the recipient, unfortunately very few if any of these sessions are eligible for coverage by the government under the news policies of the OHIP. Of course, residents are still more than welcome to participate in sessions by any licensed massage therapist, but in doing so they should be prepared to pay for the services out of their own pocket, without the hope of reimbursement from the government.

If you need to schedule a massage session for rehabilitation and are hoping that yours is one of the cases that will be eligible for coverage, make sure that your case meets the requirements above and also make sure that the clinic you are planning on visiting is on the designated list available on the OHIP website.

More detailed information regarding exact situations and types of services, answers to frequently asked questions regarding when and why the coverage was changed and the list of designated physiotherapy clinics that are part of the network can be found by visiting the OHIP website.

Physical Therapy Treatments - Specialized Geriatric Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy for the elderly is a busy field. Diseases and medical conditions hat require physical therapy abound in older people, and though such cases are not easy to handle, the results when good, are reward enough.

This field is known as geriatric physiotherapy. It was termed a specialized field in 1989. Therapists have studied the problems affecting the elderly since then. A number of problems affecting the older population have been identified and are treated by geriatric physiotherapy.

The disorders covered by physiotherapy for older people include, but are not limited to, arthritic disorders, pulmonary disease, joint replacements, cardiac diseases, cancer, balance disorders, incontinence, Alzheimer's, pulmonary disorders, strokes and osteoporosis. Each disorder is treated by it's own unique treatment.

Geriatric physiotherapy faces three different type of programs, grouped accordingly in to different categories. The first category included disorders that occur because of limb disuse ot lack of exercise. These problems are resolved using exercises that restore a person's normal range of motion.

The second category of geriatric physiotherapy addresses issues arising due to cardiovascular diseases. A range of techniques such as water therapy, electrical stimulation, physical exercise and several other methods can be employed.

The last category of physiotherapy methods treat problems related to the skeletal structure. Diseases which affect the bones, such as osteoarthritis and osteoporosis, require specialized treatments as patients have little resistance to injury and physical exercise is difficult and painful.

Osteoporosis treatments are particularly important because of the fragile nature of the bones. In addition to that, physiotherapy restores a person's balance and trains them to support themselves better, which prevents frequent falls and injuries. Some therapy centers only pay attention to gait and balance issues for the older population.

Geriatric physiotherapy, unlike other fields of physiotherapy, does not aim at making patients perform better than they used to before. For elderly patients, the main focus is on allowing them to perform basic functions and daily activities without having to rely on others' assistance. It allows them to live an independent life.

Physiotherapists also try to return the joys of hobby activities to their patients. A point in example is golf, which is sport enjoyed by several seniors. Though it has health benefits, it can be a dangerous for someone not in the best of health.

As a results, physiotherapy is often aimed at training seniors to get into the right physical shape to play their favorite sports. Allowing them the independence and physical fitness to play a sport at an advanced age gives them a physical and psychological boost. It also keeps depression at bay, which in recent years has claimed a growing number of seniors.

Rehabilitation also figures in a prominent role in geriatric physiotherapy, especially after joint replacement surgeries. These surgeries alter the gait of the patient and also influence the way the carry out everyday tasks. Physiotherapists can help them reclaim their previous quality of life.

Often the elderly will take the assistance of physiotherapy to better perform their normal functions. Doctors may also refer patients under their care to physiotherapists for problems they can assist in the treatment of. Accidents and age-related disorders are, of course, the primary reason for patients to sign up at a physiotherapy clinic. Geriatric physiotherapy has a solution for all these problems.

Pregnancy and Back Pain

Pregnancy is a time of tremendous changes in term of musculoskeletal, physical and emotional condition. It imposes a tremendous stress on the body and yet is a condition of great satisfaction and happiness. During this period, the incidence of back pain is quiet common.

The causes of the increased incidence of Low Back Ache are:

Changes in musculoskeletal system

Stretching of abdominal muscles: Due to the growing fetus as a result of which the muscles are quiet stretched as a result of which the muscle is unable to generate strong contractions and thus decreases the efficiency of contraction.
Hormonal Changes: Due to the increased level of progesterone and relaxin, the tensile strength of ligaments decreases. This also has an effect on the ligaments of low back and pelvis. The joints become hyper mobile due to ligament laxity. This may predispose the patient to joint and ligamentous injury, especially in the weight bearing joints of the back and pelvis.

Changes in posture and balance

POSTURE

It shifted upward and forward because of the enlargement of the uterus and breasts. As a result of the postural compensation occurs. One of the compensation is the increased lumbar lordosis. This can further become habitual, if proper guidance is not provided. This increased lumbar lordosis puts lots of stress on the anterior longitudinal ligament which may lead to pain.

Moreover, there is approximation of facet joints which may become weight bearing thus leads to synovial irritation and inflammation.

BALANCE

With change In Centre of Gravity and increased weight there are compensations to maintain it. The woman starts walking with wide Base of support and increased external rotation at hip. Some activities such as walking, stooping, stair climbing, lifting and reaching. If these activities are repeated then it can be a potential source of low back ache.

Types:

LUMBAR PAIN

This is basically due to the altered posture and the additional biomechanical stresses that are discussed above.

Symptoms:

Worsen with muscle fatigue after static posture or as the day progresses. These symptoms are usually relieved by change in posture and rest. Pregnant females that are usually fit of have lesser chances to develop this type of backache.

SACROILIAC (POSTERIOR PELVIC) BACK PAIN

This is due to the ligamentous laxity that leads to increased stresses on the SI joint. This leads to SI joint pain and sometimes inflammation of the joint. This is more common in females as compared to LBA, even if the female is fit.

Symptoms:

Localized to the post aspect of the upper buttock ad is described as stabbing pain deep into the buttocks distal and lateral to lumboscral joint. Pain may radiate up to the knee joint. It is aggravated by prolonged sitting, standing or walking; pain when climbing stairs, turning in bel etc. This kind of pain in not relieved by rest. This type of pain can develop even in females with active lifestyle.

MANAGEMENT:

The back pain in pregnant females presents a completely different challenge for physiotherapy and thus requires great expertise on the part of the therapist. Thus, the exercises and postural corrections must be done under a proper guidance of a physiotherapist in a physiotherapy clinic.

Why Is Bioflow The Best Magnetic Therapy?

I am unashamedly a fan of the Bioflow system of magnotherapy. It works, it's got medical evidence to back it up, and it uses the principles of the reliable, proven electrical magnotherapy equipment in hospitals and physiotherapy clinics. So what makes Bioflow different from the hundreds of other kinds of magnetic therapy devices on the market? I'll come to that, but first you need to know about a couple of things.

Hospitals Offer Great Therapy

First, let me say that the kind of treatment you'll get in the physio department of a hospital or in a clinic is the model to follow. There are at least eight different kinds of plug-in machine, some of them combining magnetic therapy with other treatments. All of these machines use two principles which make them successful:

A HUGE magnetic field, far in excess of the magnetic field strength (flux) in almost all appliances you can buy.
A system to rapidly change the magnetic pole you're near between north and south - usually called pole switching or flux pulsing.
In hundreds of medical trials and comparisons, it's these two features which have proven consistently successful in providing pain relief, relieving sore areas after physiotherapy and encouraging wound healing.

What Your Regular Bangle Does

Stuff you can wear is very different. Almost all magnetic bangles and other appliances have two features: they use between two and twenty tiny magnets (up to 1000 for mattresses); and they place the north pole against your skin over the area to be treated. So does this make the hospital equipment wrong? Hardly likely, as this electronic magnotherapy is PROVEN to work. And in several hundred medical trials, appliances like bangles and straps have only been shown to work a few cases - the exact opposite of the machines in clinics.

Better appliances - in fact, nearly all, today - use neodymium magnets. But very few of them even come near the power of the hospital machines: the magnets are far too small to generate enough flux. In fact, I've worked out that you'd need 80 to 100 of the typical neodymium magnets in bangles to give the same flux, and they'd all need to be clustered in a small area.

You'll notice, too, that the 'flux changing' of the medical machines is almost always absent. The conclusion - borne out in medical trials - is that useful therapy needs far more power than most stuff has, and the flux changing really is important.

Finally, there's the cheating (or ignorance?) that a lot of retailers indulge in when they're telling you how powerful their bangle or appliance is. You see, there are several ways of describing magnetic flux, so... (I don't have to go on, do I?) Maybe I do.

Neodymium magnets can be described, first, by the 'core strength' of the material - the magnets come in several grades. However big and powerful or small and weak the magnet, its core strength in gauss remains the same. So if the magnets are tiny, this figure is used.
Second is the flux (magnetic field strength) at the surface of the magnet, and this is most often quoted for big magnets, when the gauss number is higher than for the core strength.
And third is the flux at your skin. Even the thickness of plating or a plastic cover needs to be taken into account, because flux drops dramatically as you move away from the magnet. This is the key figure, but it's rarely quoted except maybe when they're comparing a rival's skin flux to their own core strength - naughty!
So it's almost impossible to tell how powerful a magnet is from quoted figures. The only useful test is to see what force the magnet pulls at that point, and this is how testing equipment works.

You can do it yourself - use a bunch of keys (the ring is steel) and see how it pulls, or a recent UK copper coin (which has some iron in it), and compare one magnet with another. For example, a typical bracelet magnet won't even lift one penny, whereas a magnet of useful flux will hold up a chain of four pennies (each coin at least doubles the power needed) and be maybe 30 times as powerful. Both have the same core flux, usually about 1800 gauss, that the sellers quote.

And that brings us to Bioflow.

The Bioflow Advantage

Unique among therapy systems, Bioflow mimics the hospital equipment by using both large, high power neodymium magnets and flux changing. The maker, Ecoflow plc, discovered flux changing for fuel economisers and patented it, before finding that it also applied to therapy. This led to Bioflow being designed for use on the wrist.

The usual configuration is to have the main unit over a pulse, where it delivers the therapy to the whole body through your blood. The unit is about 30 times the power of a typical bangle magnet, so it has twice the pull of about 15 magnets in a good multi-link bracelet; but more important, it has the flux-changing principle (which is also patented for therapy) that has been shown in trials to be much more effective than north-pole-to-the-wrist.

Vibration Therapy - Shaking Off Knee Pain

In the average Physiotherapy clinic, knee pain ranks second among the never ending list of diagnoses requiring intervention.

Whether it is osteoarthritis, torn cartilage (often referred to as a meniscus tear), patellofemoral pain (pain under the knee cap), a ligament sprain, or tendinitis, these conditions can all lead to severe functional limitation and a reduction in one's quality of life.

In the past, most of these conditions were treated with injections, medication, and ultimately, surgery. Over time however, we have come to realize that through appropriate, individualized, conservative management; part of which should, without doubt, include vibration therapy, there is potential to fully recover "without the need to cut".

Anatomy of the Knee
The knee joint itself, a pivotal hinge joint, is capable of bending and straightening (flexing and extending) as well as rotating inward and outward (internally and externally rotating).  It is comprised of two articulations; one between the femur and the tibia (tibiofemoral joint) and one between the femur/tibia complex and the kneecap (the patellofemoral joint).  Supporting the inside and outside of the joint, and primarily responsible for its strength and stability, are multiple ligaments and several groups of muscles; among which are the quadriceps, hamstrings, hip adductors, hip abductors, and the muscles of the calf.

Over time, the relatively simple design of the knee joint coupled with its "undesirable" anatomical location make it highly susceptible to harmful shearing forces, deleterious compressive forces, abnormal patellar tracking created by muscular imbalances, and biomechanical movement dysfunctions leading to overuse injuries and painful trauma to the surrounding connective tissue (tendons, ligaments, muscles and fascia).

The Influence of Vibration on Knee Pathology
We have already established that vibration therapy / training can successfully improve circulation, lymphatic mobility, muscle tone and strength, muscle flexibility, joint proprioception, and most importantly, efficiency of the neuromuscular system. When treating an individual with knee pathology, it is by carefully and selectively harnessing these systemic effects that successful treatment can be accomplished and the long term benefits maintained.

Osteoarthritis (OA): A common degenerative condition, knee OA generally refers to the progressive, degenerative changes to the articular cartilage that lines the surfaces of the bones that comprise the knee joint.  It may or may not include wearing of the under surface of the patella (knee cap) as well.

In either case, once the cartilage has deteriorated, the bony surfaces are exposed and with repeated exposure to normal, unavoidable, compressive forces (i.e. walking, standing, stair climbing, exercise etc.), pain and inflammation will ensue. The end result of these painful changes is a gradual reduction in joint mobility, reduced viscosity of the joint, decreased local muscular activity and support, local connective tissue tightness (including muscle tissue), gait dysfunction, and a reduced overall functional level.

For the individual that suffers from OA, "traditional" therapy interventions, although successful at times, have limitations. Chief amongst these limitations is the inability to consistently tolerate weight bearing exercises (squats, lunges, step activities etc.); an integral part of the recovery process and essential for restoring the support and shock absorbing capabilities of the muscles around the joint.

With vibration therapy, when first considering the squat position, a cornerstone exercise for lower body strength, the design of the platform allows the patient to utilize the upper body to control the amount of weight through the lower body. This helps them maintain their weight comfortably through their heels while successfully holding the appropriate joint angle. Successfully holding this position through a 30-60 second interval will not only "jumpstart" the neuromuscular system, but immediately improve circulation to the joint as well as local muscular activity and tone. This will allow the patient to tolerate further weight bearing exercises; exercises that may include the wide squat, superman squat, lunge, bridge, or unsupported heel raise.

We have only now just begun....outside of the benefits listed above, it is important to understand that, during the squat (as well as most other exercise performed on the platform), there are other systems at work as well. Most important among these systems is the proprioceptive system (please refer to my previous article for more detailed information on this system). When motion is lost in an arthritic joint, as is the case with OA, the proprioceptive system struggles to maintain clear and concise communication with the brain. The resulting issues lead to gait dysfunction, poor balance responses, and poor muscle fiber recruitment. Through vibration therapy, an extremely high amount of activity is placed upon the joint proprioceptors and the system as a whole. As a result there is an over-correction of sorts and this serves to improve the proprioceptive system's efficiency overall.

Shall I keep going? How about the lymphatic system? One of this system's responsibilities, as it applies to OA, is to help remove the excess swelling that is typically seen in an arthritic joint (acute and chronic). Often responsible for interfering with local muscle activity, this swelling also occupies space within the joint and creates further limitation in movement. Like no other form of treatment, vibration therapy, through the extremely high number of muscle contractions it creates, significantly enhances lymphatic system mobility and can lead to the quick and efficient removal of excess fluid in the joint.

At this point you are probably quite tired of reading, but I could never live with myself if I didn't address the final, critical dysfunction seen in the individual with knee OA....reduced muscle flexibility and myofascial restriction. It has been touched upon many times in previous articles on this site, but if there is ever a jaw-dropping benefit of vibration therapy, it's the way in which it can be utilized safely to override the normal resistance to stretch provided by the muscle spindle and its inhibitory communication with the central nervous system. By utilizing the vibration platform with proper body positioning, muscle length and myofascial mobility can be improved faster than any other flexibility based intervention available (medieval torture devices excluded of course).

Paint Protection and Resale Value For Your Automobile

Cars are one of the most depreciating commodities in the market. As soon as they are driven off the showroom, their prices fall by 10%. That is the reason it becomes very difficult to get a good price for old cars. Within five years, the prices of even the most expensive car brands can fall to as much as 50% of what they were initially purchased for. Hence, one thing must be kept in mind. Cars are not homes. While you can buy and sell homes and make profits off them even, you cannot do so with a car. No one wishes to buy a car that has been used before, if they do so it's only because of the reduced cost that they will have to pay for it.

There are various ways in which people try to perk up the appearance of their old cars so that they can fetch a better price in the resale market. This can include changing the upholstery of the car and using leather seats to give it a plusher look, changing the tires and putting in new ones that look and are functional, cleaning the interiors of the cars from all kinds of rubbish and refuse that might have collected in it, attaching some topographically friendly devices to the car, adding a great stereo system to the car and so on. But there is one point that can really help boost the resale value of the car. And that is, adding a paint protection on the surface of the car.

Paint protection is something that is mostly sold as an add-on when you purchase new cars nowadays. These are films that are applied over the paint surface of the car which improves the durability of the paint and also keeps the car looking newer and shinier for a longer time. However, paint protection can also be applied at any time later on. There are also DIY kits that allow these protections to be added at your own convenience and at a lowered cost.

In earlier days, people used to try and improve the paints shine of their cars through various crude methods, like waxing for example. Waxing is done a lot nowadays too, but this does not necessarily improve the resale value of the car in any way and in a continuous job. When a car is waxed, the wax layer becomes stickier on exposure to the sun and that acts as an attractor for dust and grime. When the same car is waxed again, this grime and dirt becomes compacted with the earlier waxy layer and becomes a permanent feature of the car. Hence, when the car is repeatedly waxed, it begins looking older and older and it actually brings down the resale value of the car.

On the other hand, protecting the car's paint through modern methods such as applying sealants brings the new showroom look back to the car. The best benefit here is that the paint protection stays on the car for almost the entire life of the car and the car keeps on looking shiny and sleek. Also, unlike other methods to improve the car's resale value, the paint protection can be applied on the car even when the car is being used ( eg at the owners workplace or home). Once applied on a car, most professionally applied paint protection will last for years without diminishing in any way.

Installing Paint Protection Film

Paint protective film is gaining more and more popularity as a way to protect valuable paint jobs against road debris and other hazards. Many professional installers are available to do the job and are often the best option for many people. But for those of a more do it yourself nature, the film can be applied with great success by anyone with patience and a little common sense. Here is the basic procedure.

Paint protective film is a thermoplastic urethane laminate that generally comes in rolls. The film adheres to the vehicle's surface by means of a pressure sensitive, acrylic adhesive. Anyone who has worked with window tinting film will immediately recognize the similarities between tinting and paint protective film. In fact, the two are virtually identical other than paint protective film being transparent.

The first step in the application process is to gather the paint protection film supplies. The required items are the film, application solution, squeegee, and exacto knife.

The next step is to measure and cut the film. Several manufacturers offer custom designed kits that come with the film pre-cut to fit a particular model car. This is the recommended option since the pieces must be cut very exactly in order for the film to be applied correctly. However, hand cutting is possible and many professionals do all their work by hand. Anyone choosing this route should be patient and expect to make some errors in the beginning.

Now comes the car preparation. The paint must be spotless. Any dirt or debris left on the paint will be trapped under the film and impossible to remove. It is recommended that the procedure be performed inside a garage or other enclosed space to prevent contamination after the vehicle is clean. Also, any paint imperfections should be repaired using touch up paint at this time.

Now it is time to apply the film. Use the application solution to thoroughly wet the area the film will be applied to. Begin to remove the backing from the film and position it in the desired location. Spraying the film as you remove the backing also helps. An assistant will greatly simplify this process and is highly recommended. As you apply the film, be careful not to apply pressure to it since the adhesive is pressure sensitive. Once the film is perfectly in place, begin to use the squeegee to remove the water and bubbles from under the film. Work from the center outward.

Wedding Videography - 10 Memorable Facts

Wedding videography and wedding video filming started as early as there is there were cameras able to shoot multiple set of frames. Though in the digital age, it is not costly to take quality video, it wasn't like that before the 1980's. The history of the wedding video filming is short and simple, quite interesting actually. Here are some "did-you-know" and memorable facts about wedding videography.

1. Did you know? That during the young years of wedding video filming the cameramen shot weddings on 8mm or 16mm film sizes and can only record for only 4 minutes! They needed to change the film cartridges constantly.

2. Did you know? That before, these 8mm and such cameras cannot even record any sound! Imagine a wedding turned into a silent film.

3. Did you know? That it is only during the 1980's when Sony invented the camcorder did the wedding video industry actually had full on progress. During these times, anyone who had their hands on a camcorder had access to record their special occasions. This was a huge start for wedding filming.

4. Did you know? That the use of these analog type camcorders needed extensive equipment such as lights due to the quality limitations. Cameramen and videographers use large bright lights to make the scene look better. That was probably hot for bride and groom!

5. Did you know? That wedding film making before were only focused on documentation rather than relying on artistry. Those fuzzy looking weddings were mostly just for recording the event not actually, sometimes only a bit, having any creative aspect.

6. Did you know? There is an association of wedding videographers. It is called the "Wedding and Event Videographers Association International" or for short, WEVA. This organization caters international videographers from those Asian wedding videography companies to the Americans and all across the globe.

7. Did you know? That this association also gives out awards every year. The WEVA acknowledges those exceptional video films according to technically, creativity and artistry. The awards are called the Creative Excellence Awards.

8. Did you know? That there is a major shift with regards of video editing when the DVD was invented. Wedding films on professional dvd helped a lot of videographers edit and do post-production since they were recorded digitally. Competition within the industry rose and many amateurs and semi-pro's are suddenly getting noticed.

9. Did you know? That there are actually different styles in shooting wedding events. These are namely the Cinematic, Short-form, Storytelling, Video Journalistic and Traditional styles. Two or more styles can be used by the videographer shooting the wedding.

10. Did you know? That even if there is HD quality video cameras being used nowadays, some still offer to shoot weddings in 8mm, 16mm and 35mm. Due to the high levels of creativity of our modern videographers, and thanks to technology, they can easily manipulate these cameras to invent something very unique and different from the usual digital captures. These require a lot of work since they will manipulate and fix these films manually rather than in the computer.

Wedding videography has been through a lot, from the early film days to the modern high-definition video recordings. It is evident that since technology is upgrading and is being updated every year, there will be innovations. Creativity and artistry within these videographers will never cease to flow. Time is moving fast and surely wedding video filming is sure to amaze us in the near future.

Seven Wedding Videography Details To Discuss

When going through the search to find the right person to produce the perfect wedding videography for you, there are a few things you should keep in mind. Remember: your wedding video is going to last a very long time, and be one of the most prominent memories of your most special day. You want the production values to be high, and for every detail to be recorded just as you wish. So, here are eight things you should go over with every candidate:

1. Rehearsal - Will the photographer need to attend the rehearsal dinner? If your rehearsal is at all out of the ordinary, insist on their attendance, so you know they will be prepared for any eventualities at the actual event.

2. Audio - How is the audio going to be recorded? These days, most professionals use wireless microphones that can be worn by key people in the wedding. Mini disk recorders placed at important locations can work well too.

3. Cameras - How many will be used, will they be enough, and other concerns are important to discuss. Will they be manned or unmanned? Both stationary and manned cameras have their place, and should likely be used in conjunction with one another.

4. Lighting - Most practitioners of videography use only ambient lighting while they are recording, which may not be enough. Depending on the time and place of your wedding, you need to ensure you have adequate lighting so the footage looks good.

5. Turn-around - Discuss in advance your ideas for turn-around time on the project. It is not uncommon to wait up to 3 or 4 months to receive the final, finished product.

6. Attire - Although most who offer wedding videography services are professional and will bring this up first, it is important that it get addressed. If you are having an extremely formal wedding and they show up wearing jeans and shorts, how will things look?

7. Payment - Go over the entire payment structure in detail. Make sure you understand what each deliverable is, and when it is refundable. Double check dates, and negotiate anything you are uncomfortable with

As you can see, getting the best videography talent to record your special day can be quite the challenge! Put in the extra effort of going over these questions with them, and you will be sure to find a professional who suits your needs admirably.

The Importance of Physiotherapy

If pain is a problem then physiotherapy is the solution. Study and experiences prove that physiotherapy has been a very effective tool against pains and injuries ranging from minor to major. Hence the prescription of physiotherapy can never be a wrong one in case of curing pain or injury.

In case when a joint complication is to be dealt with by the help of physiotherapy, a physiotherapist may twist or fold the limbs having infirmities into positions which are not usually posed i.e. contortion may be the part of physiotherapeutic treatment.

To get rid of muscle tenancy or immobility the physiotherapist may suggest stretches, exercises, heat therapy, massage or traction and such things alone or they may be coupled and grouped as well as per the seriousness or condition of the problem. To escape from head ache or muscle ache sometimes painkiller are effective but they have limitations and side effects as well but physiotherapy deals with pains and injuries of upper tiers. Hence its importance can't be denied in any way.
